VMXNet3 NIC and ISS Generic Miniport Driver

Hi All,

We recently P2V'ed a server. All went well. The new environment uses more networks (Management & Backup are separated) and so 2 x new Network adapters were added and configured.

This is a process we have done a number of times, so we understand routes, default gateways etc.

The new NICs could not comunicate with the outside world. After a lot of comparing servers I found the non-working NICs were not showing as linked to the ISS Generic Miniport driver.

The image above was snapped part way through the fix up. Network Adapter #3 is showing the symptom.

I think the description is just from the description in the registry. But I tracked through the Registry and there were items missing that seem to link the miniport driver to the port driver.

I first tried to just delete and re-add the Ethernet Adapter, but that didn't work. It seemed to just pick up the old settings.

So the way I resolved this was to disable the problematic NICs, then add 2 x new NICs and configure them and then delete the old NICs.

The new NICs now show up like Adapter #5 with the extended text and the Registry has been updated.

So, all is working, but what I'm trying to understand is why this would happen.

TIA,

Rob.
