I don't think that AD has anything to do with it. one thing that does help to troubleshoot instances like this is to throw logmein or some other form of remote desktop up on an inside machine (or use a mifi on a second machine to connect from outside your local network). That way you can work on troubleshooting it remotely without having to go back and forth. Have you tried (for troubleshooting purposes) throwing vCenter or a host into the DMZ to see if that has any effect?
