What is the best method to convert a physical machine to VMware if they are not in the same network.

Our customers have multiple systems with Linux and Windows that we would like to have in our test system. I've tried to convert using Acronis backup, but it got big problems to get Linux systems to boot after being converted into VMware. Is there any better way, or any way to make it work smoothly? It is not posible to connect to the costumers network from outside.
The most optimal solution would have been if it had been possible to boot the systems with a boot CD and copy the whole system to a USB drive and then add it to our ESXi somehow. But if you have other solutions, I'm open to it.
