Hi All,

can someone lend some advice/comments...

we have a a two host cluster: HP DL585 G1 and DL585 G2

we're looking to upgrade the physical RAM in both servers, but note that according to HP specs, the G1 can only support max 32GB at PC3200 RAM, or 128GB at PC2700 RAM.  Currently the G1 has 24GB PC3200RAM.

The G2 can support 128GB PC2-5300 RAM.  it currently has 28GB PC2-5300 RAM.

the reason for this upgrade is because HA/DRS cannot be implemented because of "lack of resources" ie RAM (in practice, both hosts are using approx 80% , so when one host fails...as it had recently...the other host cannot support the reassignment of vms due to lack of available memory)

So, the question is... do we:

1) stick with the PC3200 RAM in the G1 and just upgrade from 24GB to 32GB(max).  And upgrade the G2 from 28GB to 64GB using PC2-5300?

or

2) remove all existing PC3200 RAM from the G1 and downgrade to 64GB of PC2700. And as above, stick with same arrangement with G2.

i know with option 1 the problem is if the G2 host fails, 32GB still wont be sufficient for HA

with option 2, both hosts will have 64GB but at vastly differently memory speeds (PC2700 vs PC2-5300).  how does this impact the shared memory resource pool configured in vcentre? (ok, given it's already mixed with PC3200 + PC2-5300)

what would your suggestions be?

thanks

interesting.

Havent come across this discussion here but I would keep the higher clock ram as it only matters on a host by host basis, the clock speed doesnt affect the pool.In that there is nothing inherintly wrong with having mixed hardware, that is the inherant justifcation for virutalization, being agnostic to the physcial hardware.

In your senario when g2 host fails the vms would be starting from boot up anyway due to ha so it doesnt make a difference.

if someone has differing opionions that would be good to learn.
