There are probably two .msi files in the extracted files, vmwareplayer_x86.msi and vmwareplayer_x64.msi, and you need to select the platform appropriate and then right-click and select Install, or just double-click.  If the version of Windws you're running is 32-bit then select vmwareplayer_x86.msi and if 64-bit then select vmwareplayer_x64.msi.  Since you're using Windows XP it is in all likelihood the 32-bit version and you'd use the vmwareplayer_x86.msi to install from.
