GemFire does not require access to public Internet. There is a dynamic licensing option that depends on having a vFabric Licence server, but it would be a license server that you set up and control. In any case, if a distributed system starts and works for a while, I doubt that the problem is license related. What do you see in GemFire logs during the times of irresponsiveness? One thing that can cause irresponsiveness is server JVM pauses, due to stop-the-world GC collections, for example. Are you using the CMS collector? If not, your chances of such pauses go up... We can examine your logs and stats from such a run to see if we can find anything.
