I'm trying to run iLife '09 programs (iMovie, iDVD) on a OS X Snow Leopard Server Guest VM.
The reason is that I occasionally need iDVD, but prefer not to mess up the host machine with outdated and unsupported software (which iDVD unfortunately now is).
The host machine is a 2012 MacBook Air with Mountain Lion and VMware Fusion 5.
I installed the iLife package from an original boxed DVD.
I was also able to install all the necessary updates (iDVD being updated all the way up to 7.1.2, which is the latest version available)
I encounter lots of problems:
- iMovie refuses to start, saying that a graphic card compatible with "Quartz Extreme" is required but missing
- iDVD lets me create a project, but it immediately crashes when starting to encode the material. The crash log indicates:
Thread 0 crashed:
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000000
Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread
I tired everything, including:
- repaired disk permissions
- cleared preference and cache files
- allowed up to 2 GB of RAM to the VM and 2 CPU cores
- enabled "3D" acceleration in the VM display settings
- reinstalled VM tools
but no way.
Anybody ever succeded in getting these programs (in particular, iDVD 7.x) to run in a OS X server VM ?
Thanks for any suggestion!
