If you need to update the vCO workflows that were written you will have to get familiar with JavaScript. It is very easy to pick up.
If you are looking for a language binding to start the workflow then definitely ditch the legacy PythvCO which rely on the legacy vCO SOAP web service and use python with the vCO 5.1 REST service. Python must have a library to interface with a REST web service.
