Create a Linked Clone, or Shortcut to a VM stored on two different drives?

Hi, I am a student in a network administration program. We use VMware Workstation for most of our lab environment. For my current classes I need at least two, as many as three virtual Windows Server 2008 machines. The problem I have is the virtual machines tend to run very slowly when I run them from an external hard drive, but I must be able to run the machines in class in the lab and at home on my personal computer. My question is if it is possible to make copies of the virtual machines to leave one copy at school and the other at home, and use some sort of shortcut or pointer on my external hard drive to automatically update the machines when I attempt to open them, but have them run off the Host computers SSD instead of my old external drive. Now that I have written this up I realize that what I am asking is unlikely to be possible but I have hope that maybe someone who knows more about VMware Workstation has a way, or another solution to help me accomplish this task. Thank you.
