black screen on console when booting a vm

created a vm for windows 2003r2 x64 and used macrium reflect restore cd to restore a physical server backup.

when booted only get a black screen on the console, which responds to a ctrl-alt-del to reboot but nothing comes up in video and i really don't think it is a video problem.

most likely a driver problem, although the restore program does locate drivers for the proper scsi device and says it loads them, it also allows configuring for uniprocessor or multiprocessor makes no difference to the boot problem.

the recover cd also allows changing disk id and all the boot stuff but no differece to the boot problem.

just looking for some clue as to why nothing shows up at all on the console, i was expecting the usual can't find ntldr message or a bsod but it just sits there black for as long as you care to leave it.

any suggestions on troubleshooting this.

btw; the virtual disk can be successfully mounted to another machine, so the files are there but i wonder about the disk geometry
